Managed according to the principles and modi operandi described in the Charter and internal regulations, the National Collection of the "vine" networks includes various species : cultivated vine and clones and stock, as well as wild and forage relatives, and related species. It includes genotypes that France is responsible for conserving, especially French cultivars crossed off the catalogue of French varieties (list A and B), old cultivars and populations of French origins, original stock derived from collecting-missions - in the wild and among vegetable producers and users - in French territories, stock known for the presence of identified genes, genetic curiosities, etc.
The collection is available for exchange or use. On 1st October1998, the National Collection numbered some 1500 accessions of Vitis viniferia L. and 2000 accessions of interspecific crossovers (root-stock and fruiting varieties).
Part of the data on vine resources are found in a database at INRA's Domaine de Vassal.
The National Collection is part of the European GENRES 081 programme whose objective is to improve the management and characterisation of vine genetic resources.

What are the network management actions ?
|
|
 |
Vine resources are managed in France by a cooperative network of partners : conservators of public or private establishments, representatives of the sector, and institutes concerned by the resources. The modus operandi is described in a Charter and internal regulations. The members of the network agree not only to make their genetic resources available and circulate them, but contribute towards maintaining and assessing them too.
Management applies to cultivated vine plants and clones as well as wild forms and related species...
The objective of the network is thus the long-term management of a National Collection available for exchange or use.
Conservation and storage
At present, vines are essentially conserved in vineyard conservatories. The long-term bank is also used as active bank. As yet, there is no back-up bank which could be used as security duplicate.
Regeneration
Various techniques : cuttings, marcotting, layering and grafting.
Distribution
The main collections are at the INRA stations of Montpellier, Bordeaux, Colmar, Angers and at the ENTAV.
Evaluation and characterisation of genetic resources
Based, among others, on the morphological descriptors of the UPOV, CTPS and IPIGRI. Description and characterisation are based on the descriptors of the OIV, UPOV and IPIGRI.
The conservators conduct the evaluations and characterisations laid down according to the programmes approved by the network.
The data on vine resources are partly grouped under the INRA database at the Domaine de Vassal site.
