Managed according to the principles and modi operandi described in the Charter and internal regulations, the National Collection of the "Prunus" networks includes various species : almond tree, apricot tree, cherry tree, plum tree, as well as wild relatives and related species. It includes genotypes that France is responsible for conserving, especially French cultivars crossed off the catalogue of French varieties (list A and B), old cultivars and populations of French origins, original stock derived from collecting-missions wild and in French territories, stock known for the presence of identified genes, genetic curiosities, etc.
The collection is available for exchange or use. On 1st October 1998, the National Collection included : Almond trees ±50, Apricot trees ±90, Cherry trees ±170, Peach trees ±160, Plum trees ±150. Most are old cultivars or from the catalogue of cultivars of French origin.
The data on Prunus resources are found in the EPCB database centralised at the Bordeaux INRA station. The National Collection is part of ECP/GR (European Cooperative Programme for the conservation of Genetic Resources), coordinated by the IPGRI.
In accordance with a Community work programme (CE regulation no.1467/94), support is given to develop conservation, characterisation, collection and use of genetic resources, in liaison with 11 European partners (RESGEN 61 programme).

What are the network management actions ?
|
|
 |
Prunus genetic resources are managed in France by a cooperative network of partners : conservators of public or private establishments, representatives of the sector and institutes concerned by the resources. The modus operandi is described in a Charter and internal regulations. The members of the network agree not only to make their genetic resources available and circulate them, but contribute towards maintaining and assessing too.
The management applies to the following species : almond tree, cherry tree, peach tree, plum tree as well as their wild relatives, related and ornemental species. The objective of the network is thus the long-term management of a National Collection available for exchange or use.
Conservation and storage
Maintained as trees planted in conservatory orchards. Collection managed in 2 banks : a long-term bank used as active bank, back-up bank. Stock controlled for pomological and health criteria. At least 2 trees per genotype and per bank
Regeneration
Cloning, every 10 to 15 years.
Distribution
Cloning, every 10 to 15 years
.
Evaluation and characterisation of genetic resources
Based, among others, on the descriptors of UPOV, CTPS and IPGRI.
The conservators conduct the evaluations and characterisations laid down according to the programmes approved by the network.
The French Prunus database will be designed to be congruent with the European database. |
