Managed according to the principles and modi operandi described in the Charter and internal regulations, the National Collection of the "lavenders and lavandins" network includes the wild and cultivated forms of lavenders exploited and the wild relatives of the Lavandula genus related to them. It includes genotypes that France is responsible for conserving, especially French cultivars crossed off the catalogue of French varieties (list A and B), old cultivars and populations of French origin, original stock derived from collecting-missions in french territories, stock known for the presence of identified genes, genetic curiosity, etc.
This collection is available for exchange or use. On 1st October 1998, the National Collection included :
- Spike lavender : Lavandula latifolia (63 populations),
- Common lavender : Lavandula angustifolia ssp. Angustifolia (95 populations derived from 13 wild populations),
- Pyrenean lavender : Lavandula angustifolia ssp. Pyrenaica (6 populations),
- Lavandin : Lanvandula x intermedia (200 clones).
The populations and clones result from collecting-missions done from 1996 to 1998. The original stations are described on individual record sheets (consultable in the database). The populations are conserved as seeds, and the clones as plants grown in the soil (at present, 15 per clones).
The data on lavender and lavandin resources are found in a database centralised at the CNPMAI (Conservatoire National des Plantes à Parfum, Médicinales, Aromatiques et Industrielles : National Conservatory of perfume, Medicinal, Aromatic and Industrial Plants) at Milly-la-Forêt. Part of the data (in particular on the National Collection's plant stock) has been published in an annual catalogue since 1996.

What are the network management actions ?
|
|
 |
Lavanders and lavandins resources are managed in France by a cooperative network of partners : conservators of public or private establishments, representatives of the sector, and institutes concerned by the resources. The modus operandi is described in a Charter and internal regulations. The members of the network agree not only to make their genetic resources available and circulate them, but contribute towards maintaining and assessing them too. The management applies to the wild and cultivated forms of lavanders exploited and to the wild relatives of the Lavendula genus related to them...
The objective of the network is thus the long-term management of a National Collection available for exchange or use.
Conservation and storage
1) Seeds
The populations are conserved as seeds in 3 banks : a long-term and a back-up bank, where the stock is stored as long as possible before regeneration, and an active bank for storing samples for redistribution.
2) Plants
The clones are conserved as individuals grown in the soil or containers in two banks (long-term and back-up) on two different sites (20 individuals/clone/site).
Regeneration
Every 10 years for populations,
Every 5 years for clones.
Evaluation and characterisation of genetic resources
The conservators conduct the evaluations and characterisations laid down according to the programmes approved by the network. There is a centralised database at CNPMAI, Milly-la Forêt.
