Managed according to the principles and modi operandi described in the Charter and internal regulations, the National Collection of the "
Hydrangea" network includes the cultivated species of the
Hydrangea genus and its wild relatives. It includes genotypes that France is responsible for conserving, especially French cultivars free of intellectual property rights, original stock distributed from frech collections, stock known for the presence of identified genes, wild relatives.
This collection is available for exchange or use. On 1st October 1998, the National Collection included French cultivars of Hydrangea macrophylla ssp macrophylla, cultivars of Hydrangea macrophylla ssp serrata, and clones of the main Asian and north American species.

What are the network management actions ?

Hydrangea genetic resources are managed in France by a cooperartive network of partners : conservators of public or private establishments, representatives of the sector, and institutes concerned by the resources.The modus operandi is described in a Charter and internal regulations. The members of the network agree not only to make their genetic resources available and circulate them, but contribute towards maintaining and assessing them too.
The management applies to the cultivated forms of Hydrangea. The objective of the netwok is thus the long-term management of a National Collection available for exchange or use.
 Conservation and storage
The collection is managed in three bank :
- A long term storage bank where all genotypes are represented by three cloned individuals ;
- an active bank (three cloned individuals for each genotype)for the diffusion of the material ;
- A back-up bank providing maximum health guarantees.
Regeneration
The longevity of Hydrangea makes the renewal of banks not very frequent.
Distribution
The material is freely distributed for the curators of the network as well as the non-curators if it is for an exchange.
For a vegetative multiplication, only three cuttings by genotype will be send.
Evaluation and characterisation of genetic resources
The curators carry out, directly or with the help of experimental network, the evaluations and characterisations laid down according to the programmes approved by the network.
