Managed according to the principles and modi operandi described in the Charter and internal regulations, the National Collection of the "dried and shell fruit" network includes various species : chestnut tree, hazelnut tree, walnut tree. It includes genotypes that France is responsible for conserving, especially French cultivars crossed off the catalogue of French varieties, old cultivars and populations of French origin, original stock distributed from collections, stock known for the presence of identified genes, genetic curiosity, little-known foreign genetic resources that acquiring or collecting are difficult..
This collection is available for exchange or use..
On 1st October 1998, the National Collection included :
Chestnut tree : 40 accessions, Walnut tree : 60 accessions, Hazelnut tree : 20 accessions.
The National Collection is part of the FAO programme (the European, Near Eastern and North African Shell-fruit Network of ESCORENA [European System of Cooperative Research Networks in Agricuture]). The data characterising European hazelnut tree genetic resources are available on the catalogue.

What are the network management actions ?
|
|
 |
Dried or shell fruit resources are managed in France by a cooperative network of partners : conservators of public or private establishments, representatives of the sector, and institutes concerned by the resources. The modus operandi is described in a Charter and internal regulations. The members of the network agree not only to make their genetic resources available and circulate them, but contribute towards maintaining and assessing them too. The following species are managed : chestnut tree, hazelnut tree, walnut tree, as well as wild forms and related species...
The objective of the network is thus the long-term management of a National Collection available for exchange or use.
Conservation and storage
Maintained as trees planted in conservatory orchards. Collection managed in one bank : long-term bank used as active bank.A back-up bank providing maximum health guarantees is planned.
Stock controlled for pomological and health criteria. At least 2 trees per genotype and per bank.
Regeneration
Cloning every 20 to 25 years.
Distribution
Distribution : 4 shoots of 5 buds maximum per accession.
Evaluation and characterisation of genetic resources
Based, among others, on the morphological descriptors of UPOV,CTPS and IPGRI
