Managed according to the principles and modi operandi described in the Charter and internal regulations, the National Collection of the "pome fruit" network includes various species : apple tree, pear tree, quince tree, as well as wild relatives and related species. It includes genotypes that France is responsible for conserving, especially French cultivars crossed off the catalogue of French varieties (list A and B), old cultivars and populations of French origin, original stock derived from collecting-missions in french territories, stock known for the presence of identified genes, genetic curiosity, parents, especially those of offspring listed as varieties in the catalogue today.
This collection is available for exchange or use.
On 1st October 1998, the National Collection was not precisely defined. However, initial estimates reveal approximately : 2000 apple tree accessions,1200 pear tree accessions.
The network contributes to ECP/GR (European Cooperative Programme for the Conservation and Exchange of Genetic Resources), coordinated by the IPGRI, under a Community working party on Malus and Pyrus genetic resources created in 1997. The working party's main missions are to conserve, characterise, collect and find ways of using the genetic resources.
