Small-grain cereal resources are managed in France by a cooperative network of partners : conservators of public or private establishments, representatives of the sector and institutes concerned by the resources. The modus operandi is
described in a Charter and internal regulations. The members of the network agree not only to make their genetic resources available and circulate them, but contribute towards maintaining and assessing them too.
The following species are managed : wheat, barley, rye and triticale (result of crossovers between wheat and rye) as well as wild forms and related species...
The objective of the network is thus the long-term management of a National Collection available for exchange or use.
A similar programme for the dynamic management of soft/bread wheat genetic diversity has been under way since 1984.

What are the network management actions?

 |
Only a brief description of the management is given here, the reference document is the internal regulation.
Seed conservation
The collection is managed in 3 banks
a long-term bank, reserved for regeneration, in cold room (4°C ± 1°C),
an active bank for circulating material and controlling germination quality, in cold room (4°C ± 1°C),
back-up bank representing the security duplicate, in the freezer (-18°c).
The first two banks divided up among conservators and back-up bank is centralised.
The field regeneration
It's made every 10 or 15 years with a annual regeneration of a fraction of the collection, this work is shared by the curators.
Seed distribution
A distribution lot of about 20 seeds per accession with a maximum of 20 accessions per request.
Characterisation
It is done on several experimental sites and the data are centralised in the ERGE database.
