Managed according to the principles and
modi operandi described in the Charter and internal regulations, the National Collection of the "artichokes and cardoons" networks includes various species : cultivated artichokes and cardoons as well as wild relatives and related species.
It includes genotypes that France is responsible for conserving, especially French cultivars crossed off the catalogue of French varieties (list A and B), old cultivars and populations of French origins, original stock derived from collecting-missions in French territories, stock known for the presence of identified genes, genetic curiosities, etc.
The collection is available for exchange or use.
the National Collection included 28 artichokes accessions :

5 cultivars crossed off the official French catalogue,

12 varieties or landraces,

11 accessions corresponding to other accession criteria.
The National Collection of cardoons is currently being set up.
The data on artichokes and cardoons resources are found in a database (CYNARA) centralised at the GEVES of Cavaillon, Vignères site. They will be soon published in a catalogue distributed in France and abroad.

What are the network management actions?

|
 |
Only a brief description of the management is given here, the reference document is the internal regulation.
Conservation and storage
Depending on type of material.
Vegetative-propagation stock is kept in vivo (in the field or under cover), with security duplicates in sites where frost is rare,
Sexual-reproduction stock, the collection is managed in 3 banks in cold room at 4°C and humidity lower than 25% : a long-term bank and security duplicate (2 x 50 g of seeds per accession), an active-bank (10 x 50g per accession) and a back-up bank (5 x 50g per accession).
Regeneration
Vegetative-propagation stock : every 3 to 5 years, 20 plants per site and per genotype, derived from 3 to 4 offshoots per mother plants.
Sexual-reproduction stock : every 10 to 15 years from 30 plants taken from the long-term bank.
Distribution
Vegetative-propagation stock : 3 plants per accession.
Sexual-reproduction stock : distribution units of 50 g (± 1000 seeds).
Evaluation and characterisation of genetic resources
The conservators conduct the evaluations and characterisations laid down according to the programmes approved by the network.
The data are centralised in the CYNAR database managed by the GEVES at Cavaillon. |
