Microorganisms

The microorganisms group occupies a edge position between biodiversity and genetic resources and remains largely unknown due to the large number of microorganisms and difficulties in isolating them. The national strategy set forth in the National Charter for the Management of Genetic Resources is centred around questions related to ex situ conservation and suggests the organisation of strain collection management according to:

  • Information and material management networks, structured by theme, habitat or types of common microorganisms, and according, insofar as possible, with European evolution ;
  • Collections of national interest, responsible for providing a particular service to the community.

The organisation of these networks and identification of collections of national interest are currently underway. Now four networks exist :

  • RESOMIL : microorganisms of dairy interest. In this topic network, collections of bacteria, fungi, yeasts, and phages (technological or spoilage microorganisms) are involved.

    more about RESOMIL

  • MICROBE : in this topic network about fermented alcoholic beverages (wines, ciders, rums, beers and spirits), collections of bacteria, fungi and yeasts (technological or spoilage microorganisms) are involved.
  • SYMPAVE : in this network, collections of symbiotic or pathogenic microorganisms, living in/on soils, plants, waters and agro-ecosystems, are involved.
  • Macromycetes : this taxonomic network involves some collections of filamentous fungi (as mushrooms, truffles). They are eukaryotic microorganisms with macroscopic fleshy fruiting bodies (sporophores).
Others network are in "construction", notably about microorganisms which live in extreme conditions and can be used for the bioremediation of polluted environments.
